England player ratings vs Italy: Aaron Ramsdale cool, calm and collected while Harry Maguire looks shaky again

England were held to a goalless draw by Italy as they continue to wait for their first win in this year’s Nations League.

Both sides had chances in the game at Molineux, with England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale making two great saves to deny Italy in the first-half.

England created opportunities of their own and Raheem Sterling will have been particularly annoyed he squandered a great cross from Reece James.

The 0-0 draw means England have played three games in this year’s Nations League and they are still yet to claim a win ahead of Tuesday’s clash with Hungary.

Simon Collings was at Molineux to see England in action...

Aaron Ramsdale 8

Made two big saves in the first-half, first to deny Sandro Tonali and then to thwart Matteo Pessina. Looked calm all night, with his distribution impressive too.

Reece James 8

Had an excellent game at right-back, causing problems whenever he got forward on the overlap. Picked out Grealish and Sterling with two great crosses, but the chances were squandered.

Fikayo Tomori 7

The better of England’s two centre-backs and he did his hopes of a seat on the plane to Qatar no harm. Made one huge block in the first-half. Looked good on the ball.

Harry Maguire 6

He was fine but clearly still not at his best or the level he was a year ago during Euro 2020. His passing out from the back looked shaky, particularly early on.

Kieran Trippier 6

Most of Italy’s good play came down his side and he struggled at times. Fills in well enough at left-back, but looks much better on the right.

James Ward-Prowse 6

He was solid enough in the middle of the park and didn’t do much wrong. Kept it safe and simple when in possession. Looks a solid squad player, but not a starter.

Declan Rice 8 | Star man

Incredible he is still going really after such a long season with West Ham. He was everywhere tonight, breaking up play and then driving the ball forward. One of the first names on the team sheet these days.

Raheem Sterling 6

Created a great chance for Mount early on with a lovely through-ball. Missed probably England’s best chance of the game when a James cross picked him out.

Mason Mount 7

Looked lively in the No10 role after struggling in the same position against Germany on Tuesday. Hit the bar in the first-half and tested Gianluigi Donnarumma on a few other occasions too.

Jack Grealish 6

Tried to get things going and carried the ball well out wide. Missed a good chance in the first-half when James picked him out.

Tammy Abraham 6

Looked sharp early on and went close with an effort that he fired wide. Linked the play fairly well, but didn’t make the impact he’d had wanted to.

Substitutions

Harry Kane (Abraham 64’) 5

Thrown on as he continues to chase down Wayne Rooney’s goal record for England. Had one half chance but was otherwise quiet.

Kalvin Phillips (Rice 65’) 5

Will have been pleased to get on after limping off just 15 minutes into Tuesday’s draw with Germany. Did okay when he came on, throwing himself into tackles and trying to get on the ball.

Jarrod Bowen (Mount 65’) 5

Bright and lively, and full of running when he was brought on. Will hope to start against Hungary on Tuesday night.

Bukayo Saka (Sterling 79’) N/A

Marc Guehi (Tomori 88’) N/A
