England player ratings: How Eddie Jones' men fared in Rugby World Cup win over Tonga

England kicked off their tilt at the World Cup with a win over Tonga, but basic errors marred their performance.

Manu Tuilagi scored twice in the first half but momentum was continually hampered by sloppy play and poor discipline.

It wasn't until the 56th minute when England got their third try, through Jamie George, before Luke Cowan-Dickie secured a bonus point with a fourth.

Up next is the United States on Thursday.

Here are Will Macpherson's player ratings from Sapporo.

Joe Marler: 7

Made as strong a start as any Englishman, and was excellent at scrumtime and worked hard at the ruck.

Jamie George: 6

Quiet, by his standards. But still popped up in the second half with a try.

Kyle Sinckler: 5

England gave away five penalties in the first 25 minutes, and three of them were by Sinckler. Eddie Jones was particularly ticked off by the third of those, and Sinckler was not at his best in the loose.

Maro Itoje: 7

Not at his best, but still stole the ball plenty and made a general nuisance of himself. A couple of handling errors, and was involved in confusion that gave away a slightly daft penalty from a restart in the first half.

Courtney Lawes: 6

Probably not the level of aggression Jones wanted, but did not miss a tackle and carried well enough.

Tom Curry: 6

Made more tackles than any other player on the park, which offset an early handling error. Jones was full of praise for his and Underhill’s work ethic.

Sam Underhill: 7

Made a cracking early surge down the left, then came very close to scoring England’s first try. Set up Manu’s second. Ran great support lines. Bad second half knock on.

Billy Vunipola: 6

Was the victim of a huge early hit from Zane Kapeli, but grew into the game and did little wrong.

Ben Youngs: 6

Box-kicked well. But hardly fizzed England’s backs into life.

George Ford: 6

Nice early cross kick. Crucial sounding board for Farrell. Great kick and chase in second half.

Jonny May: 6

Had his hands on the ball early, but involvement faded a little before he left the field after 50 minutes.

Owen Farrell: 6

Not at his best, but improved when moved back to No10.

Manu Tuilagi: 8

His surging runs were a real joy. Does seem to love the extra space afforded at No13, but ran terrific support lines all night.

Anthony Watson: 8

An excellent evening. Chased well, was secure under the high ball and made a sensational break late on.

Elliott Daly: 7

One of his better displays at full-back before moving to the wing. Was energetic, and looked good when looking to run the ball.

Selected subs

Henry Slade: a little rusty after missing the summer matches, and should have put Daly in after Watson’s break. Took a knock to the knee but Jones says he should be fine to face USA.

George Kruis: made an impact at the set piece and bounding in the loose.

Luke Cowan-Dickie: fine support line for his try, kept up England’s perfect lineout record.

Jonathan Joseph: was given the least gametime, but made a genuine impact, setting up the crucial bonus-point score.
