England goalkeepers: A closer look at Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad options

Before Burnley’s Nick Pope was ruled out of this summer’s Euros due to injury, Gareth Southgate’s goalkeepers for his England squad looked done and dusted.

Everton’s Jordan Pickford has established himself as the country’s No1, while Dean Henderson’s rise at Manchester United this season has made him an easy call-up too.

Pope, who has been in good form for Burnley this season and started all three of England’s games in March, was in line to be the third of Southgate’s goalkeepers for the summer.

The 29-year-old, however, will now miss the Euros after it was discovered he needed to have surgery to solve a knee issue.

That has opened up a spot in Southgate’s squad and now Sheffield United’s Aaron Ramsdale and Sam Johnstone of West Brom are ready to battle it out.

Both players have tasted relegation this season, but they have been handed the chance to possibly have a dream summer with England at the Euros.

Neither player has been capped for their country, although both have represented England at youth level.

Johnstone is probably the frontrunner of the two to make the final 26-man squad for the Euros given his good form this season.

Despite West Brom being relegated, the 28-year-old has done well and he is being linked with a move this summer.

Ramsdale, on the other hand, has struggled since joining Sheffield United from Bournemouth for just under £20million last summer.
