England fans turn on Gareth Southgate during dismal Nations League defeat to Hungary

What a difference 11 months make.

Less than a year on from a heroic failure in the Euro 2020 final to Italy, England lost 4-0 to Hungary - their worst home defeat in 96years - as fans chants rained down on Gareth Southgate telling him he doesn’t know what he’s doing.

Heading into the game off the back of one defeat and two draws from their opening three Nations League games, losing to Hungary again 10 days previously, and with Southgate facing real pressure for the first time in his reign.

But this was England’s worst defeat in 58 years and worst home defeat since 1928 and raises serious questions over the squad ahead of the World Cup in five months’ time.

England remain bottom of their Nations League group, though that will be of little concern. Southgate has now overseen the worst run since his appointment in 2016.
