England face Trent Alexander-Arnold decision as Liverpool stars fight for squad place

Gareth Southgate has some tough decisions to make as he narrows down his England squad ahead of the World Cup, with Jordan Henderson’s exclusion from his match squad against Italy a strong hint of his intentions.

Southgate is set to name his provisional squad for the tournament on Wednesday 19th October, which is 33 days before kick-off in Qatar. With the final 26-man squad needing to be submitted to FIFA by Sunday 13th November, there is still time to earn - and lose - those seats on the plane, with some huge talking points across the board during the international break.

As for Liverpool ’s players, Jordan Henderson has been a stalwart figure for the Three Lions, earning 68 caps for his country since his England senior’s debut in 2010.

Despite missing some games for Liverpool recently due to a knock, he has been called up to the recent England squad, emphasising the value Southgate places upon him.

Now 32 years old, it is only natural that there have been questions as of late about his international future. However, the man himself said before the recent round of games that he wants to continue representing England.

Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold has had a shaky start to the season defensively but is still among England’s best attacking options from the right flank. Having missed the Euros due to a thigh injury, Alexander-Arnold will be chomping at the bit to prove his worth for the nation.

The likes of Joe Gomez and Harvey Elliott will also be among the Liverpool players hoping for a call up. The former last appeared for England in 2020 and while the latter is still waiting for his first senior call-up, it was reported that he was close to making the cut.
