England boss Shaun Wane has named his 19-man squad for the World Cup opener against Samoa with record try-scorer Ryan Hall one of those missing out.
The coach has picked winger Dom Young, the Newcastle Knights rookie who played himself into contention with a wonderful first appearance in Friday's 50-0 warm-up rout of Fiji. St Helens wideman Tommy Makinson is also recalled after being rested for that game and Saints loose forward Morgan Knowles is another to return.
Other players missing as well as Hull KR winger Hall are Leeds prop Mikolaj Oledzki, who is nursing an injury, St Helens second-row Joe Batchelor, Salford hooker Andy Ackers and, because of suspension, Wigan back-row John Bateman. Salford scrum-half Marc Sneyd does get the nod so Wane has the option of partnering him or Jack Welsby with half-back George Williams.
Catalans second-row Mike McMeeken was an injury doubt but he's in the 19-man squad along with veteran props Chris Hill and Mike Cooper with Wane looking certain to go big with his pack against Samoa's giant forwards.
England: Tomkins, Young, Watkins, Makinson, Farnworth, Welsby, Williams, Burgess, McIlorum, Lees, Cooper, Hill, McMeeken, Whitehead, Radley, Knowles, Pearce-Paul, Sneyd, Thompson.
