Police were questioning a man on suspicion of murder today after a young woman plunged from the top floor of a block of flats in north London.

Officers were called after the 22-year-old woman was found with critical injuries behind Brookbank in Enfield, shortly before 6pm yesterday.

Medics battled to save her but she was pronounced dead at the scene in a car park next to the eight-storey block in Turkey Street.

The victim was said by neighbours to be a mother-of-one who lived with her partner on the top floor. Police arrested a 26-year-old man on suspicion of murder and he was still being questioned by detectives at a north London police station today. A post-mortem examination was to be carried out.

A neighbour said: “She was a lovely girl and had lived here for two years. She had a little daughter, aged two or three. She lived there with her partner and daughter. It’s so very sad.” A 17-year-old neighbour said he was walking home when he saw the woman’s body on the ground.

He said: “I saw so many police in the area, I didn’t know what was going on but then I saw the woman’s body. The paramedics were working on her and doing CPR but she wasn’t moving, and from their faces you could tell she wasn’t alive.”

Another neighbour, who asked not to be named, added: “I heard loud sirens and looked out of the window and saw the lady on the ground. It’s a sight I wouldn’t be able to get out of my head.”

Emily Davis, 29, was on her way home when she saw a “line of about five police cars” outside the flats. “We heard what happened and it’s extremely sad. She was so young, that’s someone’s daughter, sister or even mother. I’m sending my condolences to her family.”

A forensics tent remained in the car park today as officers could be seen going in and out of the block. Scotland Yard said police were called at 5.49pm yesterday by the London Ambulance Service. A spokeswoman said: “A woman, aged in her twenties, was found injured in the street and was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene.

“A man was arrested nearby on suspicion of murder and he has been taken to a north London police station.

“A police cordon remains in place and officers will be in the area while initial investigations are carried out.”

In a separate incident a man was due to appear in court today after a 23-year-old woman was stabbed at a home in Holloway Road, Islington, on Saturday night.

Joseph Martelli, 22, of Holloway Road, was expected to appear at Highbury Corner magistrates’ court charged with attempted murder.

The woman’s injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

In Leyton last night two men in their twenties were taken to hospital after being shot in Francis Road. Their injuries were not life threatening and there have been no arrests.
