70 firefighters are at the scene of the blaze
(Picture: London Fire Brigade)An investigation is underway after a fire broke out in shrubland in Enfield.
The blaze started on South Ordnance Road in Enfield with ten fire engines and 70 firefighters scrambled to the scene.
Huge plumes of smoke could be seen as far away as the M25 and the fire at its most fierce covered 20 hectares. The fire brigade was first called at 3.12pm and the blaze was under control by 6.25pm.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said after the fire broke out: “The fire is producing smoke and ash which is blowing towards local properties.
“We’re asking residents to please keep windows and doors closed whilst firefighters work to bring the blaze under control.
“We’re urging people to take extra care and help us prevent fires on open land this summer.
“Make sure rubbish, especially glass, is safely thrown away and cigarettes are always properly disposed of. Grass will be tinder dry after periods of hot weather, so please don’t have barbecues in parks and public spaces.”
The Brigade was called at 1512. Fire crews from Holloway, Enfield, Chingford, Stratford, Ilford and surrounding fire stations are at the scene.
The cause of the fire is not known at this time and fire investigators are trawling for clues.
