Energy bills: How much it will cost to boil a kettle from October 1

With energy prices to soar again from tomorrow (October 1), millions of us are trying to minimise our usage in a bid to cut costs.

One appliance most of us use daily is the kettle. From cups of tea to cooking and even filling hot water bottles, it can be a godsend, especially during the colder months.

And if you're keeping an eye on how much your electrics cost to use, you may already be wondering how much it costs to boil a kettle.

Trivial as it may seem, UK households drinks an estimated 165 million cups of tea each day, according to RealHomes. With us switching our kettles on so frequently, we may want to take a look at what it costs.

Matthew Jenkins, energy expert at MyJobQuote, said: "With an estimated 95% of British families boiling their kettle at least once a day. 40% of families do so more than five times a day. The exact costs will vary on the size/power rating of your kettle plus your electric tariff cost.

"The average 2-litre kettle has a power rating of 3 kilowatts per hour (kWh), although it must be noted that it will never take a whole hour to boil your kettle! Instead, boiling a kettle for an average of 4 minutes uses 0.225kWh."

Prior to the new October 1 prices, this would mean a cost of 0.06p to boil a kettle. But as of Saturday, this will jump to 0.0765p. While it doesn't sound like much, we boil our kettles a number of times a day, and over a year this can add up.
