Energy bill £800,000 refund due to hundreds of UK households after overcharging error

A number of households across the UK are now due a refund from their energy suppliers following an overcharging error.

The refunds, totalling £800,000, affect customers with "feed-in (FIT) tariffs", reports the Mirror. These tariffs are renewable energy deals available to homes with devices like solar panels or wind turbines.

Energy regulator Ofgem has said that customers of Good Energy and F&S Energy were charged with an “unauthorised administration” fee.

Good Energy has now agreed to refund over £453,000 and to make extra goodwill payments totalling £200,000.

F&S Energy are planning to refund £94,040 and make goodwill payments of £50,000. The FIT scheme was introduced by the Government on April 1, 2010 to promote the uptake of renewable and low-carbon energy.

The scheme allows customers who generate electricity from their property to sell it on for profit. Ofgem director of enforcement and emerging issues Cathryn Scott said: "“The outcome of this matter sends a clear reminder to suppliers that they must comply with their obligations under the decarbonisation schemes and ensure that FIT customers receive payments they are entitled to for their renewable generation."

Good Energy chief executive Nigel Pocklington said: “Our annual Ofgem audit results have consistently reflected our commitment to high levels of service for generator customers.

"So we were very disappointed that Ofgem consider the admin charges we applied to a less than 1% of customers, which are not typical domestic solar generators, to be non-compliant with the scheme.

"We are no longer applying this charge and have contacted all affected customers to inform them of their refunds.”

F&S declined to comment on the situation.
