Two soldiers injured in J&K gunfight with militants

Two Army soldiers were injured as security forces exchanged fire with militants during an anti-militancy operation at Bandipora in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday. The operation was still on at the time of going to press.

The condition of the injured soldiers was said to be stable. The security forces have pressed into service a helicopter to maintain vigil in the area.

Sniffer dogs are being used to trace the militants.

An Army spokesman said the anti-militancy operation began on April 21.

The contact with the militants was established during a joint operation of the Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police in Mulkhyama Forest, Bandipore.

A firefight started in the early hours of on April 24 “after the hiding militants opened fire at them”. “The operation is in progress,” the Army said.

Security forces could not disclose the number of militants hiding in the area.
