Teen hailed 'gifted lad with so much more to give' after man appears in court on murder charge

The heartbroken employers of a young Scots outdoor activities instructor have hailed the 'gifted' lad who 'had so much more to give' after a teenager appeared in court charged with his murder.

Lewis McCartney, 18, was found with serious injuries on Viewcraig Street in Edinburgh at around 3.45am on Sunday, February 12. He was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh but died a short time later.

Bailey Dowling, 19 and of London, made no plea when he appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court accused of murder on Wednesday. Lewis worked at outdoor sports centre Bridge 8 Hub and Paddle Cafe, in the capital, and was a trainee instructor for mountain biking, paddle boarding and kayaking sessions.

Bosses at the outdoor business said: “We are truly gutted to hear of the death of young Lewis McCartney on Sunday.

“Lewis was a great trainee instructor last season and was extremely well liked by his teammates at Bridge 8 Hub. I know they’re going to miss you.

“He was so gifted, he could make his mountain bike fly had so much more to learn and give. Our thoughts go out to his family at this time. RIP wee man.”

Kirsty Stembridge, who worked with Lewis, added: “So sad to hear this. Lewis was a great wee lad to work with at Bridge 8. So much skill and potential. Condolences to all of his family and friends.”

Meanwhile customers at Bridge 8 who had been taught by Lewis described him as a "patient, lovely young guy".

Gayle Foulner said: “Such awful news. Had a fantastic evening out on the canal last year with my cubs and Lewis was fantastic with them. Sending love to his family and friends at an unimaginably difficult time.”

Elspeth Lewis said: “Absolutely devastated to hear this sad news today. Lewis took myself and my partner out paddle boarding several months ago in the pouring rain and he was so patient with a couple of total novices… such a lovely young guy. I can’t believe this has happened and so sad for his family and friends. An absolute tragedy.”

Commenting on a picture of Lewis setting up some kayaks, Alice Ruvera said: “You will be missed. I remember this day. You were setting up kayaks for my family on this day the photo was taken. We had a great summer, you will always be in our hearts and memories. I remember chatting with you about your future plans in July 2022. Sad you are gone too soon.”

Lewis' loved ones have also been left devastated by the news.

Gabby Johnston Carlyon said: “Rest in peace Lewis, a life lost too soon. Always polite, kind and good humoured whenever I saw him.”

Danni Ford added: “Still can’t believe it Lewis, you will be missed by so many people, till we meet again LM.”

Dowling - who has also been charged with attempting to defeat the ends of justice, and a third charge against the Criminal Law (Consolidation) (Scotland) Act 1995 - was remanded in custody and is due to appear again in court.

Detective Inspector George Calder said: "Our thoughts are very much with Lewis' family and friends.

"They've asked their privacy be respected at this very difficult time.

"I would like to thank the public for their assistance with our investigations."
