Emotional Mark McGhee sheds Rangers tear as he talks up Ibrox club's chance of Europa League success

Emotional Mark McGhee sheds Rangers tear as he compares Dundee plight to Europa League success

EMOTIONAL Mark McGhee shed a tear as Rangers booked their spot in the Europa League final.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side defeated RB Leipzig to ensure their spot in the showpiece in Seville against Frankfurt later this month.

McGhee has no affiliation to Rangers and played for both Celtic and Aberdeen during his playing career, but he admits the result was huge for the Scottish game.

He said: “I was in text contact with a lot of my Rangers fans and it brought a tear to my eye.

“I am not exaggerating, I was just so pleased like everyone else in Scotland should be.

“It was absolutely magnificent and shows well for the Scottish game. It is an unbelievable achievement.

“The game and performance was worthy of it and they thoroughly deserve it. I have to congratulate Rangers.

“I wouldn’t bet against them. They will only need to wait a couple of weeks and anything can happen, players getting into form or even the mental stress of waiting.

“Rangers will still be dressing themselves down from last night and they will be ready to go again. The timing will be perfect for them.

“I was at the Dortmund game and I have seen the others.

“Regardless of whether it should happen or not, they have deserved it and been the better team. They have not slugged their way to it.

“There has been quality and moments of superb moments and great goals, things deserving of a place in the final. Regardless of what other teams have done, they have earned it.

“I think a lot of the Germans will have been surprised but Frankfurt wouldn’t have been surprised because they will have seen Rangers beat Dortmund and Leipzig, who can beat them.

“I think Leipzig will be better prepared than either of them.

“Leipzig will have played big games in big stadiums against big teams but they must have come away thinking they have never seen anything like that in their life.

“I can’t believe they will have ever played in a more exciting atmosphere than they did on Thursday night. It was superb.”
