Emotional Graeme Souness fought back tears during a live TV interview as he revealed his charity challenge to swim the English Channel for the charity DEBRA.
The Rangers and Liverpool legend revealed he would announce his next move after he stepped down from Sky Sports after 15 years in the studio. And the emotional 70-year-old was welling up as he shared news of his challenge on BBC Breakfast. The charity supports people living with Epidermolysis Bullosa, a rare condition that causes fragile, blistering skin.
And Souness said: "It's the most horrendous disease. If you're inflicted by it you must wake up every morning and say why me. It's a desperate situation." He added: "And then the parents have to deal with that. And that's why we're doing this.” The football legend met a 14-year-old girl back in 2019 who was suffering from Epidermolysis Bullosa inspired him to take on this mammoth challenge. Following his announcement that he was hanging up his mic, the rumour mill went into overdrive that Souness was being lined up for the role of sporting director at Rangers.
Chief executive James Bisgrove played down a key off-field position at Ibrox but admitted he did catch up with the club legend and that an ambassadorial position could be on the cards.
Bisgrove said: “Graeme doesn't need me to say, but Graeme’s an absolute legend of the football club. He's an icon and I think our strategy will be to make sure that we've got good relationships with a lot of our club legends.
“Graeme was in Glasgow for a private engagement and dropped in for a coffee. It was an informal conversation because we want to maintain that relationship. Hopefully, in the future, he'll be involved in more opportunities in an ambassadorial sense. I think that's for Graeme to decide but I think the extent of the rumours probably went a little bit further than the reality on that one."
