A flight attendant was filmed weeping as news of the Queen's death was shared by the plane's pilot.
The British Airways steward was filmed standing at the front of the plane weeping as the sad news came over the intercom.
As she wipes tears from her eyes, her colleague can be seen with her head in her hands, looking distraught.
The announcement was made as the plane approached London Heathrow just over an hour after the news broke on Thursday, 8 September.
"The Queen passed away earlier today with the family by her side," the pilot tells the assembled crew and passengers.
"We have little more information than that at the moment, but I thought we should tell you as I know many of you will be very very sad."
He adds: "We'll all be thinking of her family at this time."
The BBC broke the news that the Queen had died at Balmoral Castle at 6.30pm on Thursday evening.
As soon as the news was spread, people began heading to her residences to publicly mourn the monarch's loss of life.
On Thursday evening a group of young men were filmed singing 'God Save the King' outside the gates of Buckingham Palace, one of the assembled mass moved to tears by the occasion.
Since then a great series of public events and a period of public mourning has swung into action.
Having been taken from Aberdeen to Edinburgh over the weekend, the Queen's body is to be transported down to London on Tuesday evening.
Great crowds are expected to gather at the side of the road in a bid to get a glimpse of the procession as it makes its way to Buckingham Palace.
The sovereign's piper will play a lament as the coffin is carried to the Bow Room to lie at rest overnight.
On Wednesday the monarch will be taken to Westminster Hall where she will lie in state until her funeral on Monday morning.
