Emory University Relocates Commencement Ceremony Due To Safety Concerns

Graduates gather during the Columbia University commencement ceremony in Manhattan, New York City

Moments after Columbia University announced it would scale back and relocate its commencement ceremony, Emory University followed suit on Monday by issuing a similar announcement. The Atlanta-based university revealed that it would be moving its commencement to nearby Duluth, Georgia.

University President Gregory Fenves emphasized that the decision was made after careful consideration and in consultation with various stakeholders, including the Emory Police Department, security advisors, and other agencies. These entities collectively advised against hosting the commencement events on Emory's campuses due to safety concerns.

Despite facing disruptions caused by widespread protests related to Israel's conflict in Gaza, Emory University remained steadfast in its commitment to holding a commencement ceremony. However, the escalating safety and security issues prompted the university to revise its plans.

Fenves acknowledged the challenges posed by the protests, which have not only impacted classes but also resulted in numerous arrests on campus. In response to these developments, the decision to relocate the commencement ceremony was deemed necessary to ensure the well-being of all participants.
