Emmerdale star Jonny McPherson, best known for his role as Dr Liam Cavanagh on the ITV soap, has opened up about his secret second job amid his confession that acting is a "precarious profession."
It comes despite the 41-year-old acting star being embroiled in the middle of an explosive storyline on the British soap programme at present as he is having an affair with Wendy, whilst her partner Bob nearly kissed Bernice in shocking scenes.
But now Jonny has opened up about a secret side hustle for cash away from the cameras rolling, revealing that he used to own a canal boat which he would rent out to tourists on Airbnb but was forced to give it up due to his busy work schedule taking up all his time.
Speaking to OK! magazine, he said: "Acting is a precarious profession. It can be very difficult to get a mortgage if you are only working for six months of the year. So, when you get two years of working on something like Emmerdale, it allows you to get a mortgage finally. I’ve got a flat now in Leeds and I’ve sold my boat.
"I did put it on Airbnb for 18 months before I sold it, and it really took off. After a while, though, it began to get more difficult to manage. I was having to check in guests at 10pm on a Friday evening on top of my full-time role in Emmerdale and I decided to sell."
He went on to reveal that some fans of the ITV show were blown away by standing on 'Dr Liam's' boat, whilst other holidaymakers didn't seem to be up nor down about who they had hired their stay with.
"A few people got very giddy standing on Dr Liam’s boat. But others didn’t realise at all. I will go travelling on a canal boat again one day, but I certainly don’t miss emptying the poo tank twice a week any more!," Jonny added.
Jonny has also revealed he has found love again with his 'wonderful' new girlfriend following his split from Scots co-star Natalie J Robb in 2021 after their romance began during the Covid pandemic before it was cut off when things became "too intense."
“I am with someone,” he told OK! Magazine. “She is absolutely wonderful. We’ve been together for a couple of years. I am really happy.”
Meanwhile, actress Susan Cookson [who stars as Wendy Posner] and Jonny opened up about the recent shocking storyline, revealing that the pair bonded over the secrets they share together.
She told The Mirror: "They're work colleagues, they get on, there's a mutual respect as colleagues but I realised the other day, there is a little bit more to Wendy and Liam. He knows about her past with the husband and the drug problem and she went to prison for a year because of her husband. I think there is a respect between the two of them and an understanding."
"And [there's] a little bit of intimacy I suppose in harbouring a secret," Jonny added.
Emmerdale airs every weekday at 7.30pm. You can also watch all the episodes on ITVX.
