Emmerdale star 'absolutely terrified' for character's future amid 'hated' storyline

Emmerdale star Lucy Pargeter says she is "absolutely terrified" for her character's future – amid the 'hated' storyline.

Fans have been left divided by the recent storyline surrounding Chas Dingle and her affair with the late Al Chapman. Chas and Al started an affair whilst her mother Faith was dying from cancer and it is what caused Cain to confront Al in the barn.

Following the chain of events, and Kyle accidentally killing Al, Cain is still in prison after pleading guilty for killing Al to protect his son whilst most of the village is none the wiser that Chas was the one having the affair.

Now Lucy, who plays Chas, has opened up about the future for her character amid the cheating storyline.

Asked what the future of Chas and Paddy's marriage will be like once the secret comes out, Lucy said: "I'm absolutely terrified," as she admitted she doesn't always agree with the choices her character has made. However, whilst she "would never condone or agree with Chas' behaviour", she describes it as an "interesting" role to play.

Lucy says she has never experienced such a backlash to a storyline before.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Lucy said of the soap's fans: "They are absolutely furious with her. In fact with all the storylines I've ever played I have never had a response like this. They are furious and the vigour and the anger they have is strong.

"They are cross – she has betrayed her marriage. But I do understand their reaction."

Lucy had previously told The Mirror how she doesn't like the storyline herself but has "sucked up her own feelings" about it to be able to portray it in the best way for viewers at home – as she slammed Chas' decisions.

"You have to [believe it.] Over the years, the amount of stories that have been pitched and given to you that are a massive gift to have, but not all the time do you believe it. Not all the time can you justify it as yourself," she said, "You have to put yourself in the character's position and go okay it’s being pitched to me, this is what I've gotta do, I have to try to believe it.

"I don't have to necessarily like it personally, but as an actress or actor you have to find truth in it and just trust what your character has been given. And if the director or the producer or the writer is putting it your way, you have to suck up your own feelings about things sometimes, and just go well if that is what my character is doing I have to throw myself into it and believe it."
