Emmerdale's Mary Goskirk star Louise Jameson hints at future romance with unlikely character

Emmerdale star Louise Jameson, who is best known for her role as Mary Goskirk on the ITV soap, has teased a potential romance for her on-screen character.

Mary arrived in the Dales earlier this year to surprise her daughter Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry), inadvertently interrupting her as she was attempting to propose to her then boyfriend, Marlon Dingle. Rhona soon grew annoyed with her mother constantly putting her down and avoiding explaining the reason for her visit.

However, the two eventually had a heart-to-heart where Mary explained that she had grown lonely during the lock-downs during the pandemic. Rhona eventually also told Mary about her plans to propose to Marlon and despite intending to leave, she decided to stay longer after believing Rhona wanted her there for Marlon's surprise birthday party, during which she planned to propose.

It was clear from the off-set that the two share a complex relationship, however, Mary has been a huge support to Rhona after her now-husband Marlon suffered a devastating stroke subsequently making her his carer.

Mary has become hugely popular among fans since her arrival in the village and in recent episodes we are starting to learn more about her and her past. She recently found an unlikely confidant in feisty Kim Tate (Claire King) when she opened up to her about her sexuality in emotive scenes.

Rhona's reaction to her mum's news wasn't great but the pair soon patched things up. Now, the actress has discussed the possibility of a new love interest for Mary as she discussed her future on the soap in an interview with Inside Soap.

She said: "I strongly suspect there's going to be a love interest, I wondered if it could be Kim, but that might spoil the friendship, so I reckon they will bring in someone new."

In recent scenes Mary admitted that she didn't think she would be successful in finding love again after losing her neighbour who she had grown close to prior to her coronavirus related death. It came after Mary made an awkward pass at Rhona's best friend Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick).

The actress also spoke of how much she enjoys playing her on-screen alter ego. She said: "I love that she's complex. One minute you wish she'd shut her mouth as she doesn't censor herself, and the next she'll be adorable and kind. Mary is like an onion, peel off another layer and there's something else to discover."

Louise also added that viewers can expect to see her play an integral role in the upcoming plans for Emmerdale's milestone 50th anniversary. She revealed: "Mary is going to be quite anxious around the 50th anniversary, as someone in the family may be in jeopardy."
