Emmerdale's Marshall's heartbreaking past and tragic secret loss ahead of health fears

Emmerdale teen Marshall Hamston, played by actor Max Fletcher, is set for worrying scenes this week as he collapses after downing booze.

The youngster has been struggling with huge events recently, from the breakdown of his relationship with his homophobic and abusive father, to discovering his sexuality.

Marshall is a relatively new character on the soap who came in as a love interest for Arthur Thomas, who had come out to his family last year.

While Arthur is in a place where he is proud and comfortable with who he is, Marshall has struggled after hiding his true identity from his ignorant father for so long.

Initially lying about his sexuality, Marshall told his cruel dad he was gay in a recent episode only to be verbally and physically abused by the man who was supposed to protect him.

It's meant that Marshall hasn't fully accepted who he is as a person, and has not come out to many people.

His father disowned him and kicked him out over his sexuality, while Arthur's mother Laurel Thomas was horrified to find bruises on his arms and offered him a place to live.

Since then, Marshall has been trying to reach out to his father but he doesn't want to know, while Marshall is torn over his feelings about his new life and not seeing his father.

Meanwhile Arthur has strong feelings for Marshall but accepted his request to just be friends for now, while he grapples with recent events.

This week it also emerged Marshall was hiding a past tragedy, as Marshall confided in Laurel about the death of his mother.

While not all details were revealed, he confirmed it was the anniversary of his mother's death this week and the first one he had spent without his dad.

Missing his dad and his mother, he confided in Laurel while it's not known when or how his mum died.

Marshall will turn to booze in horrifying scenes this week that see him collapse and choke on his own vomit.

As it all gets too much for him, he downs vodka until passing out and is discovered the next morning unconscious and in a bad way.

Laurel and partner Jai Sharma race him to hospital, but will he be okay or is another tragedy about to hit the family?

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays.
