Emmerdale sought help from the organisation Dignity in Dying in order to tackle the devastating Faith Dingle storyline.
Friday's episode of the ITV soap saw Faith ask Moira Barton to assist her in ending her own life as her cancer progresses.
Faith's difficult decision comes after she shared her concerns that as her cancer worsens, she fears could be in pain, become unable to communicate, and lose control of who she is - despite the best efforts of palliative care.
Dignity in Dying campaigns for a change in the law on assisted dying in order to allow this to be an option for terminally ill, mentally competent adults.
The nationwide organisation, which is funded by voluntary contributions from members of the public, has been working with Emmerdale on the sensitive storyline.
They have been providing research and personal testimony about the unimaginable choice Faith is contemplating - one that hundreds of terminally ill people ever year are forced to resort to under the UK’s current law.
Emmerdale researchers, producers and actors involved in the storyline also met with Steve Jetley, from Powys, Wales.
Steve's late wife Tina Humphrey, who was a Britain’s Got Talent finalist in 2010, took her own life in 2017 at the age of 45 whilst dying of an aggressive skin cancer that had spread throughout her body.
Steve explained: "Like Faith, Tina desperately wanted to live but her cancer had taken away that choice. When it became clear that nothing more could be done, she was determined to go out her own way; to stay ‘Tina’ until the end.
"She had witnessed her own parents’ painful deaths from cancer and knew she wanted to take control if her suffering became unbearable.
"She planned her end carefully but it didn’t go as expected. It took her 15 long hours to die; it was agony not knowing if she was aware or in pain. It could have been so different if she’d had the proper choice she longed for."
It's already been revealed that Moira will agree to help Faith in heartbreaking scenes that will air on ITV next week.
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays.
