Emmerdale bosses have given an honest assessment of facing up to criticism for challenging storylines.
In recent years, Emmerdale has arguably led the way with major storylines with Faith Dingle’s terminal cancer battle, Ahsley Thomas’ dementia and the handling of Marlon Dingle’s stroke all being praised. Although many plaudits have been given for the show’s handling of these major real-life subjects, of course, some do feel differently.
Emmerdale boss Jane Hudson has spoken about how the team handles positive and negative viewer reactions. As reported by Digital Spy, she said: "Laurel's termination received the most reaction. It was very negative before the episode aired, but then very positive once it had aired.”

Jane added: "People heard we were doing it and slammed us for it without having seen the show. We had some death threats thrown at us too.
"I remember getting one message saying: 'You are going to hell and so is your child'. But I will not be scared from telling stories."
Producer Laura Shaw also addressed the difficult storyline. She said: "After the episode aired, someone sent me a private message on Instagram and said, 'this happened to me 12-years-ago, I have never told anyone and then I walked into my work to find everyone talking about Emmerdale. I admitted for the first time that I had also had a termination'. It gave me goosebumps."

Jane has also told fans Emmerdale will continue to push boundaries with their storytelling and the way those narratives are portrayed. Although, there’s one storyline the soap will not be touching under the watch of the current leadership.
"We haven't covered incest, but we are not doing it," Jane stressed. "A race story will be told very differently now. It's important to tell the contemporary version of a story."
