Emmanuel Petit tells Arsenal signing Newcastle United star would make them title contenders

Ex-Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit believes Newcastle United winger Allan Saint-Maximin would be a "great signing" for the Gunners.

Arsenal restored their place at the summit of the Premier League with a thrilling 3-2 victory against Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

The Gunners have won eight of their opening nine league games but Petit insists that investment is still needed to transform Arsenal into title challengers.

"If they are to strengthen I think they need wingers because Saka, Martinelli and Jesus have been great but they have no-one to replace them if they get injured," Petit told Genting Casino Insights.

"Smith-Rowe is injured, Nketiah just signed a new contract but can he be the next striker if Jesus gets injured? My answer is no.

"All the big teams have big wingers. There’s a few in England that would be my dream for Arsenal. Allan Saint-Maximin would be a great signing. Can you imagine the damage with all the players around him?

"Wilfried Zaha of Palace too would be great. But they also need a central midfielder and centre-back as I’m not too sure about Rob Holding."

Saint-Maximin returned to action with a 12-minute cameo from the bench against Brentford, after missing Newcastle's last five league matches with a hamstring injury.

The Frenchman has registered one goal and two assists in four league starts for Newcastle this term. His two assists in a 3-3 draw against Manchester City culminated in a man of the match award, while his 90th minute equaliser at Wolves was voted BBC Match of the Day's Goal of the Month for August.
