There’s never an opportune moment for a wardrobe malfunction, but the night of being awarded an Oscar has to be up there with the very worst timing. However, if anyone could style it out it’s Emma Stone.
The Poor Things actor had a captive audience as she accepted the Best Actress Oscar for her role as Bella Baxter in the Yorgos Lanthimos-directed film, though was forced to tell them, “Don’t look!”
The actor was among the night’s best dressed, wearing a custom strapless bustier gown by Louis Vuitton with a peplum waist. And while the jacquard mint green confection, paired with a 30-carat yellow diamond necklace, had Stone looking flawless on arrival, things went awry during the ceremony — apparently somewhere during Ryan Gosling’s performance of ‘I’m Just Ken’.
After Stone had made her way to the stage she told audiences, “Oh boy. Um, my dress is broken,” and turned around to show the broken zipper. “I think it happened during ‘I’m Just Ken’. I’m pretty sure,” she added.
She went on to receive rapturous applause for her speech which honoured the movie’s full cast and crew. “It’s about a team that came together to make something greater than the sum of its parts. And that is the best part about making movies. It’s all of us together,” she said, adding, “I am so deeply honoured to share this with every cast member, with every crew member, with every single person who poured their love and their care and their brilliance into the making of this film.”
Stone also gave mention to her young daughter, saying, “I love you bigger than the whole sky, my girl.” Thought to be a reference to a lyric from her friend Taylor Swift’s song ‘Bigger Than the Whole Sky.’
Luckily for Stone her wardrobe issues didn’t last long beyond her on stage appearance, as she told reporters backstage that she was sewn back into it minutes later. And she probably doesn’t remember telling everyone about the dress drama, as the actor told press she had "blacked out" during her acceptance speech.
It might be the biggest fashion mishap at the Oscars since Jennifer Lawrence’s famous fall in Dior Couture in 2013, but the show did go on.
