Emma Raducanu's regular WTA season is over after an injury setback ruled her out of her last solo tournament.
The British number one has pulled out of the Transylvania Open in Romania citing a wrist problem. Injuries have proved a frustratingly common theme for Raducanu, whose progress has stifled after her extraordinary US Open triumph in 2021.
Raducanu 's father hails from Romania and news of her withdrawal is a blow to the event's supporters, who have grown close to the tennis star due to her strong family links to the country. She is still now expected to return to action in the Billie Jean King Cup in Glasgow next month.
A statement from the tournament read: "Unfortunately, Emma will not be with us at this edition of the Transylvania Open, due to an injury.
"We know that many fans wanted to see the player with Romanian origins on the court, and we would have liked to offer them this experience. However, tennis is unpredictable, and in such situations the only solution is recovery. We wish Emma the best of health."
Raducanu's transitional year after the ecstasy at Flushing Meadows has been hampered by a number of injury concerns, including blisters and muscle issues.
The teenager has shown tentative signs of the form that propelled her into global stardom last year, reaching the semi-finals of the Korea Open last fortnight, before pulling out with a glute injury.
Raducanu's latest outing was also encouraging despite defeat, as she fell 7-5 6-4 to world number eleven Daria Kasatkina in Ostrava. But she has not had the consistency and fitness to regularly go deep in events and succeed amid the rigours of the demanding WTA tour.
In total, Raducanu has won 17 matches and lost 19 since her US Open win and is now ranked 67 in the world, with her latest injury setback denying her the opportunity to rise back towards the top 50.
She is now to set to take a holiday break before preparing to star for Great Britain in the BJK Cup, where 12 teams compete in the team event.
