Chelsea were ready to quadruple Emma Hayes salary amid USA interest

Chelsea were prepared to quadruple Emma Hayes’ salary in an attempt to persuade her to turn down the United States job and stay at the club.

Hayes has agreed to become the new head coach of the US women’s national team after announcing her shock decision to leave Chelsea at the end of the season.

Chelsea were desperate to keep hold of Hayes and were willing her a deal worth four times her current wages.

But is thought that deal could not match the reported £1.3million a year that Hayes is set to earn with the US.

It is understood Hayes is seeking a better work-life balance, which is thought to be a key factor in her decision.

Hayes gave birth to her son Harry in 2018 and international management will allow her to spend more time with her family.

The 47-year-old has won an incredible six titles and five FA Cups during 11 years at Chelsea, who are understandably disappointed by her decision to leave.

But co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali remain on amicable terms with Hayes and are especially pleased that she has agreed to stay until the end of the season.

That gives the Blues time to identify a successor to Hayes, who may take a host of key backroom staff with her to the States.

It is understood that former Manchester United manager Casey Stoney is among those who are admired by Chelsea.

The club are planning to celebrate Hayes at their next home game, against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on November 18.

Before then, Chelsea face away matches against Everton in the WSL on Sunday and Real Madrid in the Champions League next Wednesday.

US Soccer officials are in London to finalise their move for Hayes and a deal could be agreed this week.
