Emilia Pérez actress Karla Sofía Gascón has apologised after being called out for past racist and Islamaphobic tweets resurfacing on social media.
In a statement to Variety, Gascón said: “I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt.
“As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain.
“All my life I have fought for a better world.
“I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”
This controversy comes right off the heels of the musical-crime flick’s lead star accusing fellow Oscar-nominated actress Fernanda Torres’ social media team of “tearing me and Emilia Pérez down”.
“What I don’t like are social media teams — people who work with these people — trying to diminish our work, like me and my movie, because that doesn’t lead anywhere”, Gascón told Brazilian newspaper Folha de S. Paulo in a video interview on January 21.
“I have never, at any point, said anything bad about Fernanda Torres or her movie.
“However, there are people working with Fernanda Torres tearing me and ‘Emilia Pérez’ down. That speaks more about their movie than mine.”
This time, tweets made by the Spanish-born actress mostly ranging from 2020 to 2022 have been resurfaced by X (formerly Twitter) user Sarah Hagi (@KindaHagi) and they are extremely vile and offensive.
One tweet, published in 2020 and translated from Spanish, read: “I’m sorry, is it just my impression or is there more Muslims in Spain?
“Every time I go to pick up my daughter from school there are more women with their hair covered and their skirts down to their heels.
“Next year instead of English we’ll have to teach Arabic.”

Another tweet read: “Islam is becoming a hotbed of infection for humanity that urgently needs to be cured”.
Gascón also posted a thread on X about George Floyd in 2020, stating that he was a “drug addict swindler”.

Other tweets included Gascón’s opinions on COVID-19 as well as describing the Oscars as “an Afro-Korean festival” in 2021, where Chinese-born filmmaker Chloé Zhao won Best Picture and Best Director for Nomadland.
“More and more the #Oscars are looking like a ceremony for independent and protest films, I didn’t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration or the 8M,” Gascón tweeted.
“Apart from that, an ugly, ugly gala.”

The internet has been quick to react to Gascón’s controversial comments, with Redditors describing the situation as a “mind-boggling mess”.
“And these are so RECENT, Christ”, wrote another.
“This isn’t like a 2009 tweet thing.
“What a mess this season has become.”
“Welp, [Demi Moore]’s looking like a lock imo”, chimed another user.

Gascón has been swift in mass-deleting most of these controversial tweets since their resurfacing.
But, as all of us know, the internet never forgets.
The 97th Academy Awards, which has nominated Gascón as Best Actress for Emilia Perez, will air March 3 at 11:00AM AEDT.
