Oscar-nominated actress Karla Sofía Gascón has issued an updated apology surrounding her controversial tweets in an Instagram post. The Instagram statement comes X days after she first apologised for her previous posts.
“The first thing I would like to do is to apologise to all those who have felt wrong by my way of expressing myself at any stage of my life,” Gascón wrote in a post translated from Spanish.
“Life has taught me something I never wanted to learn: it is clear to me that no matter how much your message is one [sic], without using the right words, it becomes another.
“I can’t repair my past acts, I can only say that today I’m not the same person I was 10 or 20 years ago, who even though I hadn’t committed any crime I wasn’t perfect either, I’m not even now.

“Anyone who knows me knows I’m not racist (they’ll be surprised when they find out that one of the most important people in my current life and that I love most is Muslim) nor any of the things I’ve been judged and convicted for without judgment and no option to explain his true intention; I have always fought for a more just society and a world of freedom, peace and love,” she wrote.
Gascón earlier apologised for her past tweets on January 30 in a statement to Variety, stating “I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt.
“As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain.”

Another Emilia Pérez costar, Zoe Saldaña, chimed in on Gascón’s controversy, stating that she “doesn’t support it”.
During a Q+A in London, Saldaña said: “It makes me really sad because I don’t support [it], and I don’t have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group.
“I can only attest to the experience that I had with each and every individual that was a part, that is a part, of this film, and my experience and my interactions with them was about inclusivity and collaboration and racial, cultural and gender equity.
“It saddens me.”
Gascón has since deleted her X account.
The 97th Academy Awards, which has nominated Gascón as Best Actress for Emilia Perez, will air March 3 at 11:00AM AEDT.
