Emergency services rush to scene after person 'hit by bus' in Northern Quarter

A person was rushed to hospital on Wednesday evening (June 28) after being hit by a bus crossing a road, the Manchester Evening News understands.

The collision happened just before 4.45pm on Oldham Street in the Northern Quarter, at the junction with Dale Street, with police, fire, and ambulance crews called to the scene. An air ambulance also landed on a nearby multi-storey car park.

A cordon was put in place closing Oldham Street, Dale Street, and a section of Church Street for a number of hours. The MEN understands a pedestrian was hit by a bus as they crossed the road.

Police are yet to confirm this.

Witnesses described that people rushed to the person to assist after the collision. A fire engine was at the scene 'within 90 seconds', one eyewitness said.

They said: "I was walking along the other side of the road at the time. It seemed a very bad collision.

"Quite a few people rushed into the road to help the person. Luckily there was a fire engine just down the road and an ambulance not far away too.

"I ran down the road to flag down an ambulance that was parked there and think the fire engine must’ve gone up within 90 seconds or so. It all happened very quickly and the road was very busy at the time."

The fire service confirmed that one person had been taken to hospital after the collision. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "Just before 4:45pm this afternoon (Wednesday 28 June), one fire engine from Manchester Central fire station attended the scene of a road traffic collision on Church Street, Manchester.

"The crew supported colleagues from North West Ambulance Service and Greater Manchester Police at the incident and were in attendance for around 40 minutes. One person was conveyed to hospital by NWAS paramedics."
