There was a significant police and emergency services presence on Industrial Drive overnight after reports of a fire at the Pacific National freight rail terminal at Mayfield.
Several fire crews, as well as police and paramedics, were called to the scene where initial reports had suggested there may have been an explosion in a building there, though that was later confirmed to have not been the case.
Police established a command centre on the Pacific National campus and remained active there for several hours into the evening as firefighters worked to make safe the scene.
A police spokesperson told the Newcastle Herald late Wednesday night that the terminal had been evacuated and there were no reports of any injuries.
The cause of the fire was still under investigation Thursday morning, a spokesperson for the firefighters said.
Pacific National is Australia's largest private rail freight company and a leading steel and intermodal freight operator with terminals in major cities around the country.
The details of this report are developing. It will be updated.
