Emergency services called to man in River Wear near Sunderland's Northern Spire Bridge

A man in the River Wear near the Northern Spire Bridge in Sunderland was rescued after going into the water.

The rescue happened on Friday shortly before 2.30pm and saw a number of emergency services rush to the scene.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service then assisted the man who is believed to have got into the water from the riverbank.

He was then left in the care of the North East Ambulance Service and the police.

A spokesperson for Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team said: "Sunderland Coastguard, Seaham Coastguard and RNLI - Sunderland Lifeboat Station were called to a person in the water at the Northern Spire Bridge.

"The casualty, who had entered the water from the riverbank, self recovered shortly after our arrival with assistance from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.

"He was taken into the care of the ambulance and police service. In all coastal emergencies dial 999 and ask for the coastguard."

A spokesperson for the RNLI Sunderland Lifeboat Station said: "Our volunteers were requested by UK Coastguard to launch our RNLI D Class lifeboat to reports of a person in the water in the vicinity of Northern Spire Bridge.

"Thankfully as the boat and crew were preparing to travel up the River Wear they were advised to stand down as the casualty was recovered by emergency services on scene."
