'Emergency' roadworks as 'hazardous void' found under major Glasgow road

ROADWORKS in central Glasgow have been granted an “emergency” extension after a void was discovered underneath a major street.

Hope Street in Glasgow, a key route through the city centre for buses and other traffic, has been reduced to one lane in recent weeks for sewer works under the road.

Though no timeline has been given, Scottish Water said the work would now be extended due to the discovery of a “potentially hazardous void under one of Glasgow city centre’s busiest streets”.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “There is the real chance of a sinkhole opening which would have been extremely hazardous to road users if left unattended.

“Glasgow City Council has granted us emergency permission to extend the scope of our current traffic management to allow the void to be repaired safely.”

Hope Street is still reduced to one lane, however there is no left turn from West Regent Street north onto Hope Street, and no right turn from Hope Street east onto West Regent Street.

A Scottish Water spokesperson added: “We can only apologise for any inconvenience this may cause but it is the only way to carry out the repair keeping pedestrians, road users, and our teams safe.

“Everything is being done to complete the necessary repairs as quickly as possible, and we would like to thank everyone affected for the patience and understanding.”

Local businesses are open as usual.
