Emergency Flood Warnings Issued As Ex-Cyclone Alfred Continues To Wreak Havoc

Despite Tropical Cyclone Alfred being downgraded to an ex-cyclone, the weather system is still wreaking havoc in parts of South-East Queensland to Northern NSW, as it is hit with severe flooding, heavy rains and damaging winds.

Overnight, the region experienced heavy rainfall, which prompted emergency flooding alerts for many areas of Southeast Queensland, including Luscombe, Yatala, Stapylton, Alberton, and Gilberton, in which locals were told it was too late to leave.

Meanwhile, residents in Currumbin, Currumbin Valley, Tallebudgera, Tallebudgera Valley and Elanora have been given an emergency warning to monitor conditions.

BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA – MARCH 09: Sections of Newmarket Road are flooded on March 09, 2025 in Brisbane, Australia. Australia’s east coast is experiencing severe weather as ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred moves south. While downgraded from cyclone status, the weather system continues to bring damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and flash flooding, particularly in the Gold Coast and northern NSW regions. Authorities have issued severe weather warnings, and coastal areas remain at risk of significant erosion and hazardous surf conditions. Albert and Logan Rivers received a major flood warning, with people in the following regions told to seek out higher ground: Tamborine, Cedar Creek, Wolfdene, Bannockburn, Windaroo, Mt Warren Park, Beenleigh, Eagleby, Greenbank, New Beith and Forestdale.

Speaking to ABC News, Queensland Premier David Crisafulli has warned residents to be sensible amidst the flooded conditions, despite some services like schools being reopened.

“There will be parts of the broader area where it is safe for people to go to school and go back to work. But my message today, and we do have a bit of rain left to go, is overwhelmingly you must always put your safety first,” he said, per ABC.

“That’s number one in a disaster. Property can be replaced, people can’t.”

He also warned that people knew where to go if they were instructed to head to higher ground.

“If you’re in one of those areas where there’s a major flood warning, know your area, know the risk,” he said.

Queensland residents are also experiencing power outages, with more than 230,000 people without power across the state. However, according to Crisafulli, electricity workers are doing their best to reconnect homes as soon as possible.
