'Embarrassing' reason Roy Keane only played 15 minutes for Man United Legends vs Liverpool

Roy Keane forewarned that he would not be capable of playing for a lengthy period of time during Manchester United Legends' clash with Liverpool at Anfield over the weekend.

The former Red Devils captain came off the bench during the second half of the Reds' 2-1 defeat to a star-studded Liverpool side. Keane, who won seven Premier League titles during his time at Old Trafford, was brought on with just 15 minutes left on the clock, with the scores level at 1-1.

Unsurprisingly, Keane did not receive the warmest of receptions from the home fans, which will have no doubt made the popular Sky Sports pundit chuckle. Nevertheless, it was brilliant to see Keane donning a United shirt once again, even if it was only for a quarter of an hour, reports The Manchester Evening News.

However, Keane had already made it clear that he would not be capable of racking up too many minutes, pointing to his struggles for fitness. The former Republic of Ireland international retired back in 2006, following a short spell at Celtic.

Keane, speaking to Off The Ball last month, said: "I'm not fit. I'm far from fit. My fitness levels are actually very, very embarrassing.

"Just because I've not put on loads of weight doesn't mean to say I'm fit. I wouldn't really be able to do any running.

"Put it this way, I've been invited a number of times over the last few years to play legends games or whatever you want to call it. I'd find it really difficult because I wouldn't be able to get around. Too many injury problems."

United had taken a first-half lead through former striker Dimitar Berbatov but saw the game turned on its head after the break, courtesy of goals from Mark Gonzalez and Florent Sinama-Pongolle. It means that United have lost the two 'Legends of the North' fixtures that have taken place this year, losing 3-1 to Liverpool at Old Trafford back in May.
