VISAKHAPATNAM: In a momentous discovery, the first-ever sighting of the elusive Barkudia limbless skink (Barkudiamelanosticta) has been reported within the Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary boundaries in Visakhapatnam.
This exciting finding marks a significant milestone in the field of herpetology and reaffirms the sanctuary’s importance as a biodiversity hotspot and it was discovered on the International Day of Biodiversity, making it more special.
The discovery of the existence of Barkudia limbless skink was undertaken by YagnapathyAdari, Project scientist working with Andhra Pradesh Forest Department, who has earlier documented Dutta’s Mahendragiri gecko (Hemidactylussushilduttai) for the first time from Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary back in 2020. The Barkudia limbless skink, fossorial in nature is characterized by its elongated body, muddy brown coloration, and absence of limbs, represents a unique adaptation to its environment.
The Visakhapatnam limbless skink Barkudiamelanosticta, a small reptile renowned for its unique limbless body and extraordinary adaptations, has long eluded scientific observation. Believed to be endemic to this region, this remarkable discovery provides invaluable insights into the species’ behavior, habitat preferences, and overall ecological role.
The Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary, with its rich variety of flora and fauna, has always been a source of fascination for researchers and nature enthusiasts alike. Spanning over 71 sq.km, the sanctuary boasts diverse ecosystems that provide a haven for numerous endangered and endemic species.
