Elton John's New ITV Special Leaves Viewers Baffled as They All Ask the Same Question

ITV viewers were buzzing on Saturday night as An Evening with Elton John and Brandi Carlile hit the screen, giving fans a rare look at the music legend recording his latest album Who Believed in Angels live at the iconic London Palladium. But while some were soaking up the magic, many couldn’t help but ask—who exactly is Brandi Carlile?

Within minutes of the show airing, social media lit up with confused reactions. One viewer tweeted: “Never ever heard of brandi carlisle #EltonJohn.” Another echoed the same sentiment: “Genuinely never heard of Brandi Carlile #EltonJohn.” And it didn’t stop there. “Whose this woman, I’ve never heard of her,” one person wrote, while another admitted, “Never even heard of Brandi Carlisle, but I’m watching an evening with #EltonJohn anyway”, reported the Express.

Not everyone was critical though. Some fans jumped in to defend Brandi, praising her performance and vocals. “Brandie’s voice is stunning. Love this. Love the album,” one posted. Another said: “Makes me sad how few people know who Brandi Carlile is, I was raised on her music she’s great.”

During the programme, host Dan Levy pointed out that this was the first time Elton has ever allowed cameras to capture the full album-making process. Asked if he had any regrets about letting viewers see behind the scenes, Elton admitted, “No, not really. I’m glad it’s there because it’s painful making music sometimes.”

Brandi shared that they often forgot the cameras were even rolling, which is why the footage felt so raw and honest. “It’s really authentic and just a little bizarre,” she said.

In one particularly tense studio moment, Elton was seen growing frustrated, throwing paper and slamming his headphones on the piano. “The reality is, I was exhausted, I had a lot of doubt,” he confessed in a voiceover. “I was a nightmare. Angry, I was tired, I was irritable.”

Despite the emotional rollercoaster, the goal was clear—Elton wanted their voices to blend perfectly on a harmony-led record. But it wasn’t easy. “To achieve what I wanted to achieve, I had to really work through the pain,” he said. “It was a big push. I had to feel, for the first time. I just lost it.”

The show might’ve left some viewers scratching their heads about Brandi, but it certainly gave fans a rare and raw glimpse into the emotional intensity behind Elton John’s latest project.
