Elton John has been recognized with another honor ahead of his farewell headline gig at Glastonbury Festival – being named the most iconic glasses wearer of all time.
The ‘Rocket Man’ and ‘Your Song’ hitmaker topped a poll of 2,000 Brits after wowing fans with his extravagant eyewear during his illustrious career, which has already spanned more than five decades.
Funny man Alan Carr claimed the second spot with his thick black frames – and he was followed by Dennis Taylor, whose giant half-rimmed snooker specs stunned crowds in The Crucible.
While Black Eyed Peas rapper – and The Voice judge Will.I.Am – also made the top five.
Former tennis pro-Billie Jean King, who sported glasses at Wimbledon as she stormed to victory a record 20 times, also placed in the top 10.
Having secured the top spot in the rankings, Specsavers has officially awarded Sir Elton the honorary title of ‘Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of All Time’.
Frame stylist for the high street audiology and optometry brand, Bianca Swan, said: “Whether it’s giant glasses, feathery fits or bejeweled blazers, Sir Elton John is sure to bring the glitz and glam this weekend as he takes the headline spot at Glastonbury Festival for the first time.
“And his performance on the Pyramid Stage will undoubtedly be a defining moment in his career.
“However, we believe this recognition as the ‘Spectacle Wearer of All Time’ could come a close second.
“Whether it’s his signature bright frames, the attention-grabbing size, or sparkling embellishments, Sir Elton’s glasses have left an indelible mark on the minds of fans and fashion enthusiasts alike.
“We can’t wait to see what he wears onstage on Sunday.”
The study also saw eight in 10 describe Elton John’s glasses throughout his musical journey as memorable – with 67 percent noting the bright frame colors are what sticks in their mind the most.
For 60 percent, it’s the size that makes them so unforgettable, and 48 percent are drawn to the sparkles.
But generally, 18 percent think celebrities who wear glasses are more memorable – as 54 percent say the style of the frame is often the most defining characteristic.
In fact, one in 10 has even been inspired by a specs-wearing celeb when it comes to picking up their next pair.
Nearly half (48 percent) of those polled believe it used to be ‘uncool’ to wear glasses – but now feel like everyone wants to don the look.
While 21 percent even stated glasses are now the coolest fashion accessory, the survey, conducted via OnePoll.com, found.
Bianca Swan, from Specsavers, added: “As styles come and go, one thing always remains a constant – and that’s the impact a great pair of specs can make to your look.
“Over the years different styles come in and out of fashion, but for many, they can really be the perfect accessory to complete a look.”
