Elton John has opened up in the most heartfelt way about something so many parents go through – watching their kids grow up too fast. Speaking about life with husband David Furnish and their two sons, Elton admitted he found himself mourning the end of his little boys’ childhoods.
He recalled how obsessed they used to be with Lego, until suddenly, it all stopped. “The boys were Lego crazy, then one day it just stopped,” he said. “They never used to care about what they wore, then Zachary Googled to see what people were wearing to the Coachella festival and ordered his outfit accordingly”, reported the Express.
One moment in particular hit him hard. “We drove Zachary to senior school when he was 13… and I came back and burst into tears,” he said. When David asked what was wrong, Elton replied, “I’ll never see my little boy again.” It was a real turning point.
“I mourned the fact that I couldn’t pick him up anymore because the kids have made all the difference to my life… It’s about the boys now. We’re making sure they’re OK, making sure they’re appreciative and not spoiling them too much because, you know, I’m Elton John”, he said in an interview with The Times.
That emotional honesty seems to be a recurring theme for Elton lately. In another moment of raw reflection, he revealed how a new song he was working on brought him to tears – not just because of the lyrics, but because it made him confront his own mortality.
Appearing on The Graham Norton Show back in February, the 78-year-old shared that he was working on a song called When This Whole World Is Done With Me, and everything was fine… until the chorus. “I find that it’s about my death, my demise,” he said. “And as a 76-year-old man, which I was at that time, and having children and having a husband, mortality, and you think about, ‘How long have I got?’”
He said the realisation hit so hard that he completely broke down. “I started singing it and I lost it for 45 minutes. It was a very, very heavy moment for me.” Eventually, he pulled himself together and went back into the studio the next day. “I just came in and did its vocal and piano at the same time,” he said. “It’s a really lovely song.”
It’s clear that even with decades in the spotlight, Elton still feels everything deeply — especially when it comes to family, love, and the legacy he’ll leave behind.
