What's better than Elon Musk giving you a million bucks one day? Scoring $19.3 billion.
And that's exactly what happened Thursday when shares of Tesla jumped 21.9% following better-than-expected quarterly results.
Musk's nearly 13% stake in the electric-vehicle maker won the stock market lottery. The value of the whole company surged $150 billion — in just one day, says an Investor's Business Daily analysis of data from MarketSurge and S&P Global Market Intelligence.
"Last night Tesla delivered an early Christmas present for investors as the bulls got a monster margin rebound and a surprisingly strong delivery outlook for 2025, which we would characterize as an Aaron Judge-like quarter and guidance," said Dan Ives of Wedbush.
But no one got a gift larger than Musk.
Musk's One-Day Gift
Musk's giant one-day windfall brings the value of his position in Tesla to $107.1 billion. That's dramatically larger than another other investor's stake.
A who's who of ETF giants own the next largest stakes of Tesla. But none is anywhere near Musk. Vanguard scored $11.2 billion in the one-day rally on its 7.4% stake in the company.
And iShares owner BlackRock hit the $8.9 billion jackpot on its 6% position in the company.
Wait One Second ...
But just as Musk's million-dollar-a-day giveaway might be short-lived, so too is the Tesla bonanza.
To be sure, the third quarter was stellar for Tesla. The company's bottom line topped forecasts by 20%. That's despite revenue coming in 1% light vs. estimates.
But this windfall may lose some steam. Analysts think earnings will fall 25% in 2024. The stock is only up 5% this year, trailing the S&P 500's more than 20% jump. And that explains TSLA's low 52 RS Rating and lackluster 52 Composite Rating.
But for today, Tesla investors — and Musk specifically — are the big winners.
