Elon Musk, the new owner of the social platform Twitter, has dissolved its Trust and Safety Council, an advisory group of around a hundred independent civil and human rights organisations and other similar bodies.
The company formed the council in 2016 to address hate speech, child exploitation, suicide, self-harm and other issues that had reared their heads on the platform. The council had been scheduled to meet Twitter representatives on Monday night. But shortly before the meeting was due to take place, Twitter informed the group via email that it was disbanding it.
Several members of the advisory group provided images of the email from Twitter to The Associated Press, and spoke on condition of anonymity due to fears of retaliation. The email stated: “Our work to make Twitter a safe, informative place will be moving faster and more aggressively than ever before and we will continue to welcome your ideas going forward about how to achieve this goal.”
The email was signed “Twitter”.
According to an article published by the American television network CNN, three members of the council resigned in protest last week, writing in a statement that “contrary to claims by Elon Musk, the safety and wellbeing of Twitter’s users are on the decline.”
