Elon Musk's super PAC, America PAC, has made headlines with its significant financial contributions to support Donald Trump's potential return to the White House in the 2024 presidential race. According to the latest disclosures filed with federal regulators, the super PAC has spent more than $140 million on various campaign activities.
The disclosures reveal that a substantial portion of the funds, over $80 million, has been allocated to canvassing and field operations. This includes hiring door-knockers, phone bankers, and other canvassers to engage with voters in battleground states. Additionally, the super PAC has been conducting daily $1 million giveaways to registered voters in these key states, a move that has drawn legal action from the Philadelphia district attorney.
Aside from the on-the-ground efforts, America PAC has also invested heavily in direct mail campaigns, with over $20 million spent on printing and postage to target battleground voters' mailboxes. Digital advertising has also been a significant focus, with more than $18 million allocated to producing and running online ads.
However, the super PAC faced criticism for a recent digital campaign that portrayed Vice President Kamala Harris in a controversial manner. A video posted by America PAC referred to Harris as the “c-word America simply can’t afford,” with the term 'c-word' later revealed to stand for 'communist.' The video sparked backlash and raised concerns about the tone and messaging of the super PAC's digital outreach.
Elon Musk's involvement in forming and supporting America PAC underscores the growing influence of wealthy individuals in shaping political campaigns and testing the boundaries of campaign finance regulations. As the 2024 presidential race unfolds, the actions and expenditures of super PACs like America PAC will continue to be closely monitored for their impact on the electoral process.
