Elon Musk Makes Video Appearance At Far-Right Event In Germany

Following Elon Musk‘s controversial appearance at Donald Trump‘s post-inauguration event, the tech billionaire made a surprise appearance at a Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) election campaign event via video call, where he publicly stated his support for the far-right political group on January 25.

“It’s good to be proud of German culture, German values, and not to lose that in some sort of multiculturalism that dilutes everything,” Musk stated to over 4,000 individuals.

“I’m very excited for the AfD, I think you’re really the best hope for Germany’s fight for a great future for Germany,” Musk addressed AfD party leader Alice Weidel.

Weidel thanked him and called upon her party’s followers to ‘Make Germany Great Again’.

Anti-far-right individuals protested the event while it was happening, with over 10,000 gathering outside Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate and up to 20,000 people marching in Cologne.

This comes less than one week after Musk made a controversial salute that many likened to that of a Nazi salute at a post-inauguration event for Trump.

While Musk’s supporters were quick to point out that it was more likely a ‘Roman salute’, many others remain unconvinced.

Musk’s appearance at a far-right political event in Germany will likely do little to quell the controversy.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), an organisation built on combating anti-Semitism, initially defended Musk’s salute as an “awkward gesture” and mentioned that it was “not a Nazi salute”.

However, Musk made a series of cringe-inducing Nazi-themed ‘jokes’ on his X page in response to the controversy.

The ADL’s CEO, Jonathan Greenblatt, responded to Musk’s attempt at humour by stating that the Holocaust “is not a joke” in a Tweet.

“The Holocaust was a singularly evil event, and it is inappropriate and offensive to make light of it,” Greenblatt wrote.
