ELON Musk has agreed to help fund the legal bills of Tommy Robinson, according to claims made by supporters of the far-right agitator.
Musk has been a vocal supporter of Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, on social media although has not revealed any donations himself.
However, a post on Robinson’s Twitter/X and Telegram accounts read: “We are grateful to Elon Musk and his team at X for agreeing to provide support to Tommy Robinson for two specific legal cases.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Elon and his team for their unexpected and generous assistance with these cases.
“Tommy is immensely grateful for their support, which came as a complete surprise.”
It comes as Musk faces criticism himself as he was accused of giving a Nazi salute at the inauguration of Donald Trump.
However, he took to his own account on Twitter/X – the platform he owns – to hit back at those criticising him over the incident.
The statement by Robinson’s (below) team said the first of the legal cases relates to the far-right leader’s treatment in prison, “including violations of his human rights and his classification as a category C inmate”.
It adds: “Despite being a civil prison he is placed in isolation under this classification.”
A second legal case relates to the charges Robinson faces under the Terrorism Act.
In October, he was charged following his refusal to grant police access to his phone which Robinson’s team said contained “privileged information”.
His team added further that “it is important to clarify that Elon and his team are only involved in these two cases”.
The account also stated that, thanks to Musk’s support, a crowdfunding campaign which looked to raise £125,000 for legal fees has been stopped.
The funding campaign had raised just over £100,000 although it is not clear how much Musk donated or indeed if he has given any money at all.
The i Paper, which reported the news, said it has not been able to verify the tech billionaire’s involvement.
A second crowdfunding page seeking funds to support Robinson’s children posted a statement which said: “In January, Elon Musk announced he will cover Tommy Robinson’s legal bills going forward, so we are putting our crowdfunding efforts on hold.
“Thanks to everyone who contributed.”
Robinson was previously jailed in October for 18 months after admitting contempt of court for repeating false claims against a Syrian refugee.
