Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy are scheduled to address Republican House and Senate members on Thursday afternoon, as announced by Speaker Mike Johnson’s office. The meeting, set to focus on President Trump’s newly proposed agency, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), is slated to take place at 3 p.m. ET in the congressional auditorium.
President Trump introduced the idea of a government efficiency commission as part of a series of economic plans revealed in early September. Musk and Ramaswamy have been chosen by Trump to lead DOGE, with the aim of enhancing government efficiency.
During his campaign, Trump emphasized the commission as a means to cut government spending. He stated, “As the first order of business, this commission will develop an action plan to totally eliminate fraud and improper payments within six months, resulting in saving trillions of dollars.”
It is crucial to understand that although Trump has pledged significant changes through this initiative, Musk and Ramaswamy will not possess direct authority to implement spending cuts, regulatory modifications, or other actions. The group will operate independently from the government and is expected to provide recommendations to the White House for the president’s annual budget. However, Congress is not obligated to adhere to these suggestions.
