Ellis Guilford School launches 'immediate investigation' into report pupil was shot with BB gun

A Nottingham secondary school has launched an investigation after a child was reportedly shot in the face with a BB gun. A pupil is alleged to have been injured as a result of the incident at Ellis Guilford School, Basford, earlier today (Wednesday, 13 July).

The incident, which is said to have happened during a lesson, has prompted worry from some relatives, with one telling Nottinghamshire Live that it was a "major safeguarding issue". "You send your child to school thinking that they are going to be safe," they said.

"This is a major safeguarding issue. I would be mortified if that happened to my child. I just can't think of a worse school."

A spokesperson for Ellis Guilford said: “The school launched an immediate investigation into the incident with a view to disciplinary action. The police have now been notified and the school will be offering full support with their enquiries. We are confident that this was an isolated incident, and that Ellis Guilford remains a safe environment for our pupils.”

Inspector Gordon Fenwick, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Officers were made aware of an incident at Ellis Guilford School, Bar Lane, Basford, that reportedly took place at around 10.15am on Wednesday (13 July 2022). A 16-year-old girl is understood to have suffered minor injuries after being assaulted.

“We will be working closely with the school’s safeguarding team to support the victim, fully investigate the incident and take positive action to resolve the issue. Enquiries are ongoing to establish what happened but we are satisfied that this was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to anyone’s safety."
