GB News presenter Ellie Costello has publicly apologized to her co-star Paul Coyte after laughing at him for using a popular football phrase during their breakfast show. The incident occurred when Coyte said, “the place was rocking,” a term commonly used in football commentary to describe an electrified stadium atmosphere.
Costello, 31, began the segment by saying, “I’d like to start with an apology, Paul,” prompting a playful response from Coyte, who quipped, “I’d like it written, please!” The host then clarified her earlier reaction, admitting she had laughed at Coyte when he used the phrase, explaining, “I thought it sounded quite dad-like.”
However, she quickly learned that “the place was rocking” is a well-known expression in the football world. “But Ben [Leo] told me this is a well-known football phrase, and the stadium is often rocking. I’m sorry. I apologise. It’s my ignorance of football terms,” she said, reported by the Express.
Ben Leo, another co-presenter, seized the opportunity to lighten the mood, asking Coyte, “Do you forgive her?” Coyte, showing mock seriousness, scratched his chin and raised his eyebrows, which led to Ellie teasingly commenting, “Oh, he’s not sure—I’m getting the silent treatment!”
After a brief pause, Coyte sighed and responded, “I think so,” with Ellie expressing relief. “Oh, good. I’m glad everything is okay now,” she said, closing the exchange on a positive note.
The humorous moment between the two presenters quickly became a talking point for viewers, with many taking to social media to comment on the lighthearted interaction. While Ellie Costello’s apology was met with good-natured acceptance, the exchange also highlighted how terms and phrases from the world of sport can sometimes be misinterpreted by those less familiar with the lingo.
