Ellen DeGeneres has reportedly been at loggerheads with her neighbours over an extension to her £15m Cotswolds home since moving to the UK.
The former daytime TV presenter relocated from the US to south-west England following Donald Trump’s election victory in November and has said she is here to stay.
But despite embracing local life, including visits to Jeremy Clarkson’s pub, her transition hasn’t been entirely smooth.
According to the Mail, DeGeneres, 67, has been accused of increasing flood risk and disturbing Roman ruins with modifications to her property. She is said to have committed a “technical breach” by adding a single-storey extension to the farmhouse, prompting objections from the local parish council.
“The onus is on the owner to report any historic remains uncovered,” council documents read.
“Concern was expressed by residents that the hedge and wire fence could increase flood risk in the village' if rubbish was swept down and 'caught on the fence', thereby 'limiting flow across the field'.”
DeGeneres retired from comedy last year after an ill-received comeback special on Netflix.
“I decided to take up gardening,” DeGeneres said on the show.
“I got chickens. Let me see what else I can tell you about what’s been going on … Oh yeah, I got kicked out of showbusiness … Yeah, the ‘be kind’ girl wasn’t kind. That was the headline.”
Her talk show Ellen was last broadcast in 2022 after 19 years and she was troubled since 2020 with allegations of behind-the-scenes bullying. Comedian Kevin T Porter tweeted in March of 2020 asking for people’s bad experiences with DeGeneres, who he called “notoriously one of the meanest people alive”. This led to her apologising and making changes to her team before ultimately stepping back to spend more time with actress de Rossi - who she married in 2008.
A spokesperson representing DeGeneres told the Mail that the works were completed to a “high standard” and are more than 200 yards from the Roman remains.
David and Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss, Taylor Swift, Patrick Stewart, Elizabeth Hurley, and Damien Hirst also live nearby making it an A list part of the world.
