'Elland Road will become toxic' - Newcastle United fans revel as three relegation rivals beaten

Newcastle United supporters have taken to social media to express their delight at the defeats suffered by Premier League rivals Leeds United, Watford and Norwich City.

Leeds have flirted with the relegation zone throughout the campaign and disappointed against Everton, suffering a 3-0 defeat.

Meanwhile, Watford squandered an opportunity to leapfrog Newcastle in the table by falling to a 2-0 home defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Norwich City had the unenviable task of facing league leaders Manchester City and were beaten 4-0 on home turf.

The Magpies are in action against Aston Villa tomorrow and if they emerge victorious, they will trail Leeds by just two points.

Eddie Howe's men are already out of the bottom three and occupy 17th place in the table but will now be hoping to create a more comfortable distance between themselves and the relegation zone.

@JakeJackmann tweeted: "Good results at the bottom. Not that it particularly matters, I trust us to sort ourselves out without relying on others."

@nufcpanda tweeted: "Class results today for the Toon!"

@Ginger_Pirlo tweeted: "Some teams are in free fall. Some teams are stuck in the mud. We're on the up! Bring it home tomorrow lads!"

@Steve_Harper86 tweeted: "Another decent set of results for Newcastle today, good to see Everton winning to drag Leeds into the mix."

@ToonMouthTyne tweeted: "Perfect set of results. [Crystal] Palace are in the mix for relegation too. Really hard fixtures coming up. Everton beating Leeds keeps both of those teams within touching distance. We didn't want Leeds to win either. Watford losing again."

@ThespenceUK tweeted: "Leeds have now conceded 46 goals, which is on par with Norwich [ posted before Norwich conceded four goals against Manchester City ]. If they lose to Manchester United, Elland Road will become toxic. They are in this relegation battle."

@nufcsanjay tweeted: "Good set of results for us today. Norwich comfortably beaten, Watford with a deflating loss, and Leeds getting sucked a little closer to the bottom three. Tomorrow is a great opportunity to really pull away and ease our worries massively. Win tomorrow, and we're safe in my opinion."

@DaveHarvey17 tweeted: "Newcastle game just got even bigger! A win puts us four clear of Norwich with a game in hand and six clear of Watford and breathing down Brentford's throat! It’s gone from four teams to now seven who are in trouble."

The Magpies appeared destined to remain embroiled in a battle for top flight survival but have been buoyed by Howe and new recruits signed in the January transfer window.

Supporters may also be encouraged by a glance at Leeds' fixture list, as they are scheduled to face Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur before the end of the month and points may prove difficult to pick up.

Although every match in the Premier League presents a challenge, Newcastle's upcoming run of fixtures appears considerably less daunting.

However, focus will be on Aston Villa for the time being and supporters can follow live match updates here.
