Ella Toone speaks out and 'holds her hands up' after red card against Spurs Women

Ella Toone has spoken out after she was sent off during Manchester United's game against Spurs at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Reds went down to ten-women during a frantic six or seven minutes which saw Spurs equalise, an own goal from Molly Bartrip to give United the lead and then the red card.

Toone was shown a straight red for reacting to a leg-locking challenge from Eveliina Summanen - but it was her reaction which was full of fire and passion that looked to have triggered the sending off, and has now seen her take to Twitter off the back of it.

She said on social media: "Pride myself on the passion and love I have when playing for this club. Hold my hands up for my reaction and I’ll learn from it. Proud of the team."

Teammate Millie Turner replied to her, "we got you sis, always".

Manager Marc Skinner confirmed after the game that he would be appealing the red card and called Summanen's reaction to Toone's challenge 'play-acting' in a post-match interview with Sky Sports.

If Toone's red card is uncontested, the number 10 will miss games in March against Leicester, Chelsea and West Ham at Old Trafford.

Regarding the impact of missing Toone for the next three WSL games after her teammate was shown the red card, Leah Galton said: "[It will be] Huge, obviously I mean you see her quality she's great on the ball and she's very attacking but we have a strong squad this year and I think we'll be fine to manage that and make sure we attack different ways and use our ability from other players."
