Eleven people have been injured after a passenger plane heading from Lisbon to London Heathrow was forced to make an emergency landing, according to reports.
A flight carrying 194 passengers was forced to land in Porto due to a smoke alert at around 4.45pm on Tuesday.
Nine people were taken to hospital, having inhaled smoke, while two other passengers received assistance near the plane, the Portuguese newspaper Correio De Manha reported.
Portuguese Civil Protection sources told the newspaper: “There are 194 passengers on board and crew and passengers are in need of urgent medical assistance.”
Around 57 personnel and 15 emergency vehicles from the fire department, Red Cross and police rushed to the scene.
Flightradar data shows the flight dramatically changing course and heading to Porto after being in the air for around an hour.
The plane, run by TAP Air, was seen making a loop over western Spain at around 4.20pm, before heading towards Porto.
It then landed at Porto's Francisco de Sa Carneiro Airport just after 5pm.
The flight then took off from Porto around four hours later at 9pm before safely landing at London Heathrow, according to Flightradar.
A TAP spokesman had earlier said the plane was diverted to Porto because of a “technical issue and landed safely” saying passengers would be put on another aircraft so they could reach their intended destination as soon as possible.
